In a last minute effort to burnish his legacy as level handed towards law enforcement officials, Obama signed an executive order today strengthening traffic enforcement laws nationally.
The order mandates that beginning in 2018, US based automobile manufacturers must incorporate technology to force compliance with local, state and federal driving laws on a comprehensive basis. The program works off cloud based technology where details of specific traffic laws in all US jurisdictions will be centralized. Vehicles manufactured after 2018 will require internal detection devices that issue traffic citations, including DUI, for payment directly to affected jurisdictions. In an effort to streamline government agency involvement, fines will be accessed by direct draft from the offender’s bank account accompanied by a printed receipt from the vehicle-based tracking device. Empty or overdrawn bank account status will trigger the so-called “three mile rule” where vehicle ignition will auto-lock within three miles of electronic notice location.
The law mandates full compliance for all US vehicles on a retrofitted basis by no later than 2020, although at this time, farm equipment and motorcycles have not been addressed. Budget experts close to the Obama administration expect the program to raise more than 70 billion dollars to fight global warming by 2020.
Law enforcement officials have lobbied for an updated approach to traffic court funding for years and this order is seen as a much appreciated peace offering to the law enforcement community. Bill Jacobson of the Law Enforcement Association of America said “Obama’s got a pen and he’s willing to use it. We applaud that.”
According to Deborah Robertson of the conservative leaning Century Foundation “Republicans are fuming over this regulation and it’s invasion of driving privacy. President Obama has used executive orders more than any administration in the history of this country and we are looking forward to a sorely needed change to stop this abuse of power.”
The law is expected to be opposed by the incoming Trump administration, however experts say it is very unlikely to be overturned.

Trump has got to take a giant tire tool to this crazy idea. I can’t imagine a world where Americans are tracked and monitored at this level of detail…and talk about a hidden tax!$!$!

Whooooaaaa rightwingnutheads! To quote a famous new President elect, “we are a country of laws’. That’s why he says he’s building the Mexican wall and throwing thousands of innocent immigrants out of their new promised land. Just obey the existing traffic laws and you will have no problems! Trump lovers you can’t have it both ways. I repeat, JUST OBEY THE LAWS!

Leslie is right. Obama is the president and he knows a lot more than the public knows about the real threats to our country. The Trump crowd need to stop the bitching and whining!
